Cambria Consulting were appointed as Civil and Structural Engineers for the new education block of Bassaleg Secondary School in Newport. The new building will provide modern, state of the art facilities that have been designed to meet the modern and future predicted requirements for communication, teaching and social interaction.
The new building will include new expressive arts classrooms, a large whole school assembly hall with stage, a whole school flexible dining hall with new catering facilities a whole school LRC and many more features. The project also includes 2 brand new 3G sports pitches and 1 new MUGA separated from the school block with a new swale.
Modelled to BIM level 2, the building is a Steel frame on traditional reinforced pad foundations and a ground bearing slab. The upper floors and roof are composite concrete/metal decks. The building is brick clad up to 1st floor with Composite cladding panels fixed on cladding rails up to Roof, there is a large area of glazed curtain walling along the front elevation of the building.
Due to the requirements of large, open plan areas at ground floor and 1st floor, the structure contains many large span steel elements and 3 storey truss that spans over the dining area opposite a heller-up stair seating structure.
The building was analytically modelled using Tekla Structural Designer and all civils analysis and cut/fill modelling was modelled using Civils 3D.
