From Classroom to Consultancy: Jack’s Week of Work Experience

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Jack Lewis for a week of work experience with our Structures and Civils teams. As a sixth form student with a keen interest in mathematics, physics and a future career in engineering, Jack spent five days gaining hands-on experience of the day-to-day work undertaken by our engineers. From learning industry-standard software to developing an understanding of design and problem-solving processes, Jack embraced every opportunity to learn. Below, Jack shares his own reflections on his time with us at Cambria.

Throughout pretty much all my time at school, I have had a passion for Mathematics and Physics and a career in engineering has always been an ambition of mine. As I am still in the sixth form of my school completing my A levels it was great to have the opportunity to see what a job within this sector would look like beyond school. During my 5 days spent with the team at Cambria I feel my knowledge of various aspects of a future career and various skills I have learnt has increased substantially. I am very grateful to all those in Cambria for letting me be a part of their team for a little under a week and grateful to Joe from the civils department and Noah from the structures department for taking time out of their very busy schedule to aid my learning.

In my 3 days in the structures department, I spent time with Noah learning how to use software such as Tekla and AutoCAD to design a sixth form area in a school. Noah and I took this step by step and he made the quite challenging and complex process very straight forward and encouraged me to push my creativity with his help.

In my 2 days in civils, I was taught some other skills such as learning how to prove for example that a car can utilise a car park fully in software such as AutoCAD once again. Joe was incredibly supportive and taught me very good lessons in how to take pride in work and to also experiment heavily when doing tasks to always see if there are perhaps alternate solutions to a problem.

I have found the last 5 days a great opportunity to use prior skills I have learnt within various sectors in school and to learn lots of new skills at the same time. I have found the entire process extremely interesting and has boosted my ambition to work in some form of engineering sector in the future. I would like to thank Cambria again for this opportunity and we will hopefully cross paths again at some point in the future. Thank you.
