The completion of a project is a proud moment – and we are thrilled to see the Newport Transporter Bridge site now ready for its reopening to the public.
The Grade 1 listed transporter bridge is an iconic part of the Newport skyline and one of only six operational transporter bridges across the world. The extensive refurbishment and development of the bridge has included construction of a brand-new Visitor’s Centre, complete with education centre and interactive exhibitions. The bridge itself has also been restored to its former glory.
The Cambria Civils team were involved from the early stages, leading the SAB approval design and process and coordination of the site wide design with the main bridge refurb project as well as supporting with the NRW marine licenses required. We also designed the external areas, surface water and foul water drainage.
On the Structures side, Cambria designed the three-storey hybrid braced/moment resisting steel frame with composite floor slabs on piled foundations for the visitors centre building itself. There was also the challenging construction of an interconnected link bridge from the second floor of the VC to the existing southern bridge leg which needed close coordination between all involved parties including CADW.
This has been a complex but deeply fulfilling project that we are proud to be a part of. The wider project team included:
