In April 2013 Cambria set out to demonstrate its commitment to environment management by achieving Green Dragon Level 2 Certification.  Each year we will have to go through a vigorous inspection to maintain this certification.

Green Dragon is a stepped Standard recognising effective environmental management systems relevant to the specific needs of companies and organisations.  It assists if you aspire to ISO 14001 and to receive recognition for the steps you have made, particularly if your business activities mean they don’t achieve all the elements for certification – it gives you something to show for your efforts.

The standard is implemented by Groundwork Wales who are a UKAS Accredited Inspection Body and charity which helps organisations make changes in order to live and work in a greener way.

There are five levels – each more relevant to certain business activities, with Level 2 being the most appropriate for our office based situation. We had to review our day to day operations and develop a realistic Improvement Plan and Emergency Pollution Control Plan.  We also had to create a Register of Environmental Legislation applicable to our organisational activities. In addition, we have to formally record and monitor water, electricity usage and business mileage incurred each month.  We also have our waste paper, cardboard, plastic and tins collected every other week by Wastesavers for recycling.  We undertook an analysis of staff transport methods which highlighted how eco-friendly we are with half our staff either cycling or taking public transport to work, with others car sharing when appropriate.

Each company that achieves the Standard features on the Groundworks/Green Dragon Website. This information can be used by customers (and potential customers) wishing to verify the environmental credentials of their suppliers and also by participating companies to network with other companies and share knowledge and experiences.
