This week, 14-20th October, marks the start of Recycle Week 2024 – an annual event to encourage and celebrate waste reduction and recycling.
To mark the event, the Cambria team would like to share some insights into the recycling efforts that go on in the business, and some tips for other companies who are looking to be a little greener.
1 – Easy access to recycling bins
It’s a lot easier to recycle everything correctly if bins are properly signposted and easily accessible.
In the Cambria office there are recycling stations on each floor, with a variety of bins available for specific types of waste – from paper and cardboard to hard plastics.
2 – Can’t recycle it yourself? Find someone who can
Some items can’t easily be recycled from your premises – but that doesn’t mean they can’t be recycled elsewhere.
We take hard-to-recycle items like printer cartridges, used batteries and soft plastics to our local supermarket instead, where they are collected regularly.
3 – Consider charities
There are many charities in operation that can not only take away items you no longer need, but also turn a profit from them.
We donate old IT equipment to Recycle It 4 Free, who operate a zero-landfill policy, and donate a portion of their proceeds to Every Cloud – a child-centred play therapy charity.
Chairs, desks and other large furniture that are no longer in use are collected by WasteSavers, to either be recycled or sold on at one of their shops.
4 – Ditch the disposables
We all love a good coffee, but we’re less keen on filling up the bin with disposable cups. To help avoid this, we’ve invested in a range of Cambria merchandise that our team reuse daily instead of the disposable alternatives.
We included a water bottle, a reusable coffee cup, and a canvas tote bag among a range of other goodies.
5 – Make it a team effort
It’s easier to adopt good recycling practices if the whole office is on-board. So, communicate your recycling policy well and explain why it’s so important.
Gary Mitchell, Cambria Director, said: “Reducing our waste – collectively and individually – is definitely a priority at Cambria and we have a number of policies in place to make sure we’re sending as little as possible to landfill.
“One of the most important things is making sure everyone understands the recycling policy, and all pitching in to make sure things are done correctly. Everyone does their part at Cambria and that’s the way it should be.”
