Learning and volunteering: Cambria’s year in industry placement takes Oliver out of the office

This September, Oliver joined the Cambria team for his year in industry placement. We believe learning and growth doesn’t end in the office – and that’s why everyone who completes a placement year with us is given a dedicated charity day to volunteer for a cause they are passionate about. It’s a small gesture that brings meaningful benefits all round. Participating in a charity day is a great way to step outside the usual nine-to-five and gain new experiences. It’s also a great way for those new to the industry to grow their confidence, contribute to a meaningful cause, and develop wider skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork – all of which are essential to engineering roles.

Oliver’s charity day

Last month for his charity day, Oliver took inspiration from Trish and Gabby and chose to spend the day with Gwent Wildlife Trust. Oliver spent the day at Magor Marsh for a practical conservation day, where volunteers came together to maintain and protect the wetland.

To understand the significance of the habitat he was supporting, Oliver’s day began with a talk from Nature Recovery Officer, Ben Boylett, who brought the story of Magor Marsh to life, sharing its rich history and the reasons the habitat plays such an important role environmentally.

Working together

Oliver spent the day cutting, raking, and bagging materials with a team of volunteers, who worked together to help restore the wetland, Although these hands-on efforts may seem small, they play an important role in protecting the environment as well as supporting local wildlife.

Protecting local biodiversity

Oliver was delighted to support Gwent Wildlife Trust and help continue their essential work and wrapped up his day with a guided tour of the marsh and the chance to see habitats for otters, herons, and water voles up close, which was a real highlight.

Why we encourage everyone to take a charity day

Charity days are core to Cambria’s values and are one way we show our dedication to the community. For Oliver, taking a day to support a local cause was a really rewarding experience – where he had the chance to complete a different kind of work – one that may have a lasting benefit for local biodiversity.
