It is great to see progress on the site of the Former Windsor Colliery, Abertridwr, where 152 new homes are being built.
We have been involved in this tricky engineering project since 2020, and are pleased to see Prichard’s making a great start on the site remediation works and installing the major infrastructure to support the development as part of the enabling works contract.
The site presents a number of challenges: steep topography, large depths of colliery spoil, multiple watercourse and culvert crossings, foul sewer diversions and more.

Our drainage solution includes numerous raingardens features, permeable paving, detention basin, below ground attenuation tanks, multiple flow controls, daylighting of existing culverts, culvert diversions, ordinary watercourse consents (OWC) and SAB approval.
With these measures implemented the surface water runoff from the site can be managed and treated at source while also addressing the runoff from the adjacent hillside, thereby reducing flood risk to the watercourse downstream of the site.
Hopefully good weather going forwards will assist progress, and we are looking forward to working with M&J Cosgrove on the main works contract.
We thank the Caerphilly SAB team and Mark Goodger in assisting in getting this complex surface water drainage solution through to SAB approval and securing the OWC consents to date.
